Clearly if you are traveling to another country for educational purposes then international student insurance coverage is critical . You could be injured or become ill while you travel, you may need to see a specialist, you could be injured while playing sports or you may become exposed to an infectious disease, especially if you are a medical student. Choosing a plan that is right for you isn’t always the easiest thing to do. There are many options and while plans that are offered through school may fill a small need, there are many other needs they may not cover. These plans often put unrealistic limitations on the care you receive such as restricting which physicians you can see, having high deductibles and having maximum coverage levels. There are also other things that may be excluded including injury during sports, injury while traveling back and forth between home and school and others. Picking the right plan will depend a lot on cost, the regulations in the state where you plan to attend school, and if traveling abroad, governmental regulations. All schools are also free to have their own requirements for health insurance coverage. In addition to covering ‘well’ visits, you will want to have insurance for prescriptions, sports, and you may also want to verify that your policy covers ‘year found’ care, not just care during the time you might be attending school. One other option that is typically available in many student policies is a guaranteed renewal which is available after you have left school and will save you the hassle of obtaining insurance after your graduation. Student policies offer a range of plans that have deductibles ranging from $250 to $2500 and you should carefully review your plan to determine which deductible plan is best for you. One deductibles are met, you want to also review what your plan pays (as far as percentages) for your care as these may also vary from 25% to 90% of the balance of any care that you might receive. If your policy offers a prescription drug benefit, determine if these are included in your deductibles and what limitations apply to them as well. Check with your school or university and find out what their state regulations are in regards to wellness benefits as many states have adopted mandated benefits. If you have pre-existing medical conditions that require ongoing care, you will also want to find out what your policies coverage is. Many policies deny coverage for pre-existing conditions for a specified period of time once your policy goes into affect and this period is generally twelve months. Finally once you receive a copy of your policy be sure to carefully review, coverage maximums, any conditions or services that are not covered, and all deductibles that you are responsible for, charges for services that may not be covered such as prescription drugs, outpatient care, etc.. Entering school in a distant place causes enough stress in your life, finding the right insurance coverage should help ease that stress not add to it. |
